Here are some Mentor Support tips we think will help you have a more successful mentor experience.
Set Realistic Goals
Be careful to initially establish realistic guidelines for communication and contact. This will help keep misunderstandings minimal. Length of Contact Short, but regular contacts accomplish much more for your student than lengthy but irregular get-togethers. Quantity is as important as quality!
Keeping Dates
Trust will be crucial to your relationship and nothing undermines that trust quicker than broken appointments. Be sure to notify your student in advance if you cannot make an appointment.
Suggested Activities
While the project encourages creative and entertaining activities during the summer, a significant shift towards academics is the agenda for the fall.
Responsibility is to Student
Your sole responsibility is to your student, not his/her family, too. Try to keep your activities from including family members except on rare occasions.
Contact Site Coordinator
Do contact your Site Coordinator often for support and feedback. They may have current information regarding your student that you are unaware of. They can also intervene if you have not been successful in contacting your student.
Documentation
Accurate documentation regarding your activities and time spent with your student is vital to the project evaluation. Timely feedback from the "front line" to your Site Coordinator regarding this documentation is critical to the success of the program.
