Face-to-Face Mentoring


Role OF A Mentor

Mentors:

  • Serve as role models;
  • Listen;
  • Offer guidance and personal support;
  • Discuss consequences of various decisions;
  • Introduce mentee to new experiences, places, people and ideas;
  • Assist mentee in establishing academic, personal and career goals;
  • Encourage youth to graduate and help develop job readiness skills; and
  • Have fun!

Mentor Profile

  • Age 21 or older;
  • Have an interest in working one-to-one with youth;
  • Able to impart a non-judgmental perspective and attitude; and
  • Possess a valid California driver’s license and automobile insurance.

Minimum Time Commitment:

  • 4-6 hours per month for at least one year;
  • Attend an initial four-hour mentor training;
  • Participate in a one-hour individual interview;
  • Attend at least four mentor support meetings per year;
  • Periodically attend with mentee special events and activities; and
  • Make weekly phone contact with youth.
