The purpose of the mentoring program is seek out high school and middle school youth within the boundaries of District 5170 who are at risk of not earning a high school diploma.
Rotarians
matched one-on-one with these youth provide a valuable service as positive
adult role models.

Mentors’ Role:

Assist
youth with class project assigned by teacher (for sample project click here)
·
Be
the person who listens (and is interested) to their dreams
·
Encourage
them to "go" for their dreams and know that they are achievable if
they make good choices
·
Help
them to set a plan and understand the step by step process of reaching a goal
·
Assist
in the understanding that there are many life paths that they could follow and
that ultimately they will find themselves on a particular path because of the
choices they make each day
·
Encourage
self accountability and the understanding that life is a series of choices and
consequences
There
are a number of administrative and logistical tasks required for a mentoring
program to run smoothly. Be A Mentor,
Inc. will perform the following :

Market
the program to District 5170 Clubs
·
Obtain
permission from schools to partner with respective Rotary Clubs
·
Work
with school teachers to create class project and prepare for Rotarians to be
mentors to students
·
Train
teachers to use the Be A Mentor, Inc. computer email mentoring system
·
Parent/guardian
orientation and consent
·
Work
with appropriate club directors to recruit club members as mentors
·
Conduct
background investigation on each Rotarian Mentor Applicant to meet the
standards of Be A Mentor, Inc and Rotary’s Youth Protection Training and Live
Scan requirements
·
Assure
that each Rotarian is adequately trained to be a mentor
·
Provide
on-going support to teachers
·
Provide
on-going support to Rotarian mentors
Cost
is $200 for each participating Rotarian – minimum of $1,000 per club (5
mentors)
