Mentor Background Clearance
Prior to referring mentors to schools for matching with a student, each mentor is required to undergo a clearance process that includes:
- Fingerprinting (electronic scanning).
- Tuberculin screening.
- Verification of valid drivers license and proof of insurance.
- Submit two personal references.
- Attend a two and one half hour training class.
- Personal interview with school-site coordinator.
The elapsed time from receiving a mentor application to referring a mentor to a school-site can be as short as a couple of weeks or as long as several months. Mentors sometimes become impatient and drop out before the process is completed. Others become discouraged when, after such a long induction process, they are not matched with a student soon after. Mentors are not guaranteed to be matched with a student. A mentor/student match depends upon the school- site coordinator approving the mentor for matching with a student.
