Comment on the Email Mentor Program
"It's going really well. We email each other at least once a week and share things that are going on in our lives. I'm also going to help her write her first resume...I'm really enjoying this." -Joan
"The email mentoring program is an excellent way to connect students with the high tech executives. Due to the time constraints in our lives most of the people don't have any spare bandwidth to add mentoring to their schedule, virtual mentoring gives them flexibility to offer their skills with a very little time commitment. It's good for mentees too as they get to ask anything they can put into words and expect a prompt response. Most importantly it taps a pool of people who wouldn't have participated in the conventional mentoring program. My experience with email mentoring was positive and I hope I was able to offer useful advice to my mentee. Most of our interaction was focused on how she was doing in school and her career plans. The frequency of communication varied from couple of email a day to once in two weeks. I only wish I could have had this opportunity when I was a student!" -Ishu
"I have been corresponding with my email mentee, Paul, for about 2 months now. We write each other about 2-3 times a week. We have talked about several topics. At the beginning we started by talking about each other. We discussed our likes and dislikes as well as hobbies. During our 'chatting' we both mentioned our affinity for the game of chess. So, we talked about it and decided to start a virtual game. After a few e-mail s, we had worked out the board and how we would represent each other's moves. It is fun. We started the game about three weeks ago and are at about our 5th move. I think the Email Mentoring Program is great. For the students, it allows them to communicate with someone in the real world. It gives them a better understanding of what there is to look forward to. The Mentor gets the privilege and honor of helping a young person explore his/her world and allows the Mentor to feel more connected. It is also nice to reminisce about what I did when I was that age!" -David |
