Be A Mentor

Email mentors are employees of sponsoring firms and organizations. Sponsoring firms and organizations promote mentoring among their employees, allow a specified amount of time for the employee to communicate via email with the student and sponsor each volunteer employee with a contribution of $200 to cover costs
Employees (Mentors) and students communicate ONLY via email. No face to face visits. The intention is that mentors will be able to communicate with students from their workstations while students use classroom or home computers.
Discussion of a wide range of personal, career exploration and business issues with emphasis on topics of discussion provided by teachers that relate to subjects students are studying in the classroom.
Mentors and student communicate for the term of project specified by the classroom teacher - Projects range in duration from several weeks to several months.
Communicate 30 minutes to 1 hour/week with the students, if not more.
Red flag procedure: If a student mentions in an email that he/she is contemplating personal harm or an act of violence, notify the student's teacher about the situation. SIB will provide mentors with the school contact information upon being matched.

2. Students have increased interest in math and science		Students report on intending to take advanced high school classes

3. Assist students in their understanding of potential career opportunities in technical professions		Students indicate an increased interest in pursuing a career.

4. Students have an increased understanding of the competency skills needed to be successful in a hi-tech job.		· Students showed an increased proficiency in these skills due to their interaction with their mentors, as evaluated by their mentors. The competency skills are: 1. Ability to express thoughts clearly 2. Dependability - Responding to mentor e-mails in a timely manner 3. Incorporate researched information into projects 4. Demonstrates proficiency in basic computer skills 5. Negotiates - Works toward agreements with mentor involving the exchange of resources
